Plantagenet Lake (29015600) is located about 2.5 miles south of Bemidji in north central Hubbard County, Minnesota. Plantagenet Lake is 2529 acres in area with a maximum depth of 65 feet.
There is a DNR concrete public access off county road 9 in the southeast corner of the lake. An earthen public access is located off county road 35 in the northeast corner of the lake.
The DNR manages the lake for muskie, northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. Fishing available at Plantagenet lake includes black crappie, bluegill, bowfin, brown bullhead, largemouth bass, muskie, northern pike, pumpkinseed sunfish, redhorse, rock bass, shorthead redhorse, tullibee, walleye, white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch.

Lake Plantagenet is a calm and scenic lake, located only three miles southwest of Bemidji, Minnesota. Over the years, the lake has become one of the most popular residential lakes in the Bemidji area. Wetlands, youth camps, upscale homes, resorts, and trails make up the partially irregular and heavily wooded shorelines. Unlike other lakes, fishing isn't the the big attraction of Lake Plantagenet, although fishermen still love the lake for it's great fishing. Instead, visitors come from all over the area for the endless water activities. Boats, canoes, kayaks, pontoons, and sailboats can be found on the clear waters. Visitors enjoy swimming, waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, sailing, and relaxing on clean, sandy beaches.
Although there aren't any campgrounds on Lake Plantagenet, the Lake Bemidji State Park and Itasca State Park are only a short drive away and offer different camping options.
Lake Bemidji State Park is in a beautifully wooded area, and has many opportunities to explore the surrounding wilflife. Visitors are encouraged to bike or hike Fish Hawk Trail. Along the trail, guests can birdwatch or experience the beauty of a tamarack bog, carpeted with a variety of plant life that bloom during late spring and early summer. Lake Bemidji State Park offers swimming, seasonal fishing, and boating on Lake Bemidji.
The Park also has great camping opportunities. It consists of 95 drive-in sites with woodland shade. Some of the sites accommodate for RVs, and about half have electricity. The group camp, Bass Creek Camp, that is for tenting and has room for up to 30 people. There are four camper cabins that include heat and electricity. Each cabin has a screened porch and an outdoor firering and picnic table. Pets are not allowed. There are two shower facilities, flush and vault toilets, and an RV dump station located on the campground.
The Paul Bunyan State Trail also has it's northern trailhead in Lake Bemidji State Park, and provides over a hundred miles of year-round enjoyment for bicycling, hiking, skiing, and snowmobiling.
Itasca State Park is Minnesota's oldest state park, where the headwaters of the Mississippi River and great towering pines are national landmarks. There are many historic sites within the Park and tours are available. The Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center offers outdoor interpretive displays and the Headwaters Cafe for visitors to relax and take in the scenery. The Park also has naturalist programs and other activities scheduled year-round.
There are two main campgrounds with a total 223 drive-in campsites in the Itasca State Park. About half of the sites are electric, and many of them accommodate RVs up to 60 feet. There are wheelchair accessible sites, backpack sites, cart-in sites, and a group camp that accommodates up to 50 people. The Mississippi Headwaters Hostel provides other lodging options. Both campgrounds have their own shower facility, flush and vault toilets, and RV dump station.
The Bemidji area has a wide variety of activities and attractions to keep guests of Lake Plantagenet busy. There are art galleries, golf courses, paintball and laser tag courses, geocaching, horseback riding, amusement parks, restaurants, movie theaters, and more.
A must see for those who visit Bemidji, is Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, Babe, standing next to the Tourist Information Center. The one-of-a-kind statues are part of the National Register of Historic Places.
Paul Bunyan's Animal Land is another popular attraction in the Bemidji area. It is Minnesota's largest wildlife park and petting zoo, consisting of nearly 100 animals, whose origins represent every continent on earth. Paul Bunyan's Animal Land includes an indoor learning center, gift shop, playground, picnic areas, and RV parking.
Lake Plantagenet was once bordered with numerous resorts, but today only one resort still exists.
Balsam Beach Resort is located on Lake Plantagenet, only four miles south of Bemidji. The Resort has activities that all ages can enjoy. These include sand volleyball, a water trampoline, game room, heated outdoor pool and clean, sandy beaches, a playground and play area for children, and some horseshoe pits.
There are eight cabins on Balsam Beach Resort. Each cabin has a beautiful view of the lake, modern kitchen equipment, kitchen and bedroom amenities, cable TV, and air conditioning. Radio, gas grill, fire rings, use of the fitness center, and boat rentals are included with the rental of a cabin. There is also a designated strip within the Resort for RVs.
